Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy
When HIV makes copies of itself, the virus often makes mistakes. These mistakes can cause changes in the new copies of the virus. These mistakes produce a changed HIV that is different from the other HIV found in your body.
Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy or HAART includes 3 or more HIV drugs. So, if 1 of your drugs is not effective against the changed HIV in your body, it is likely that another one of your drugs is effective against the changed HIV.

What Types of Drugs Usually Make Up HAART?

The most common combination of drugs used in HAART today includes 2 NRTIs with 1 NNRTI or PI. The number of pills that you have to take depends on the type of combination you and your healthcare provider choose. The number of pills can range from as few as 1 to as many as 16. Talk to your healthcare provider if you are worried about the number of pills you have to take.
